Mining and Mineral Use | Earth Science

There are many ways to mine ores. Surface Mining. Surface mining allows extraction of ores that are close to Earths surface. Overlying rock is blasted and the rock that contains the valuable minerals is placed in a truck and taken to a refinery. As pictured in Figure below, surface mining includes open-pit mining and mountaintop removal. Other methods of surface mining include strip mining, placer mining, and dredging.

An Introduction to the Chemistry of Metal Extraction ...

Instead, the usual ore of aluminum is bauxite - which contains from 50 - 70% of aluminum oxide. Copper is much rarer, but fortunately can be found in high-grade ores (ones containing a high percentage of copper) in particular places. Because copper is a valuable metal, it is also worth extracting it from low-grade ores as well.

Extraction of Metals (Metallurgy) Overall Science

The extraction of the metals from the calcined or roasted ore consists of two steps i.e., removal of earthy impurities and reduction of the ore to metal. The different methods applied for carrying out the concentration of ores are useful to separate only a part of gangue and the ore still contains some earth impurities.

Extraction of Metals | Good Science

Metals with an intermediate reactivity, such as iron and zinc, which form part of minerals, need to be chemically extracted from ore. This is done by a process called carbon reduction. Carbon reduction is a type of displacement (redox) reaction, where carbon is used to displace the metal from the mineral compound.
